Paros and Antiparos: our island notes

Paros and Antiparos: our island notes

Short, practical answers to what guests ask us before they arrive, written by the Naoussa team that meets them.

Which months suit Paros best?

For warm water without the August crush, aim for June or September. July and August bring the busiest beaches, the most nightlife and the highest rates. May and October are quiet and pleasant, though the sea is still fresh for swimming.

How do you get to Paros?

Paros Airport (PAS), on the southwest coast, receives flights from Athens that take about 40 minutes. Ferries from Piraeus and Rafina land at Parikia, the main port, and boats from Mykonos need roughly 40 minutes to an hour.

How do you reach Antiparos?

From Pounta, a small car ferry makes the crossing in about 7 minutes and shuttles back and forth through the day. Summer boats also run from Parikia, and by yacht you can step off at a seafront villa.

What should I know about the meltemi?

This dry north wind blows on many July and August days. It turns Golden Beach and New Golden Beach into windsurf and kitesurf playgrounds, while bays on the south and west sides usually stay calmer. Check the forecast the night before you pick a beach.

Which part of the island should I stay in?

Naoussa puts you near the Venetian castle, the fishing harbour and the best dining. Parikia suits ferry days and has the Panagia Ekatontapyliani church. The east coast is for long sandy beaches, Lefkes for hill-village calm, and Antiparos for waterfront villas and a slower rhythm.

What is worth seeing beyond the beaches?

Walk the Byzantine path from Lefkes down to Prodromos, visit the ancient quarries at Marathi where Parian marble was cut, and climb over the granite shapes of Kolymbithres. In Antiparos, the cave and the Despotiko sanctuary are the highlights.

What local food and drink should I try?

Order gouna, the sun-dried mackerel grilled at harbour tavernas, finish with souma, the local grape spirit, and look for wines from Paros vineyards. Tell us your taste and we book tables that serve them.

Is a private yacht day worth it?

It is the simplest way to see the Antiparos coast, Despotiko and beaches no road reaches. Momentum yachts based in Paros start at €1,200 for a half day, skipper and fuel included.
