Paros coastline and clear sea on a summer day

Best time to visit Paros

Paros has a long season. The sea is warm enough for most swimmers from June to early October, rain is rare from June to September, and the meltemi wind shapes July and August. Here is what each month is really like, which festivals to plan around and when to book boats, villas and transfers.

June and September: our first choice

If you can choose, come in June or September. The sea is around 22°C in June and 23°C in September, days are long and warm, and it rains about one day a month. Beaches, restaurants and boats are busy but not packed, and the meltemi is usually lighter than in high summer. September is our favourite month for boat days: the water has had all summer to warm up and the evening light is softer. Book villas early for both months, as they fill with repeat guests.

  • Sea 22–23°C
  • About one rainy day a month
  • Easier tables and sunbeds

July and August: peak season and the meltemi

July and August are the hottest months, with average highs of about 27–30°C and the sea at 23–24°C. They are also the busiest. The meltemi, the dry northerly wind of the Aegean, is at its strongest, often 20 knots or more in the afternoon. It keeps the heat bearable but can make the sea choppy and ferries slower. Plan boat days for the morning, let our skippers choose sheltered coves, and book everything, from sunbeds to transfers, well ahead.

  • Highs around 27–30°C
  • Wind strongest in the afternoon
  • Book 2–3 months ahead

Spring and October: quiet, green, cooler sea

April and May suit walks, villages and long lunches more than beach days. Highs are around 18°C in April and 22°C in May, and the sea is still 16–18°C, so only keen swimmers go in. October is warmer in the water, about 21°C, with highs of 21–23°C and a few more showers. Many beach bars and some restaurants close during October, and ferry timetables shrink from November. From November to March, Paros is a quiet working island.

  • Best for walks and villages
  • Sea about 21°C in October
  • Fewer ferries in winter

Festivals worth planning around

Summer in Paros follows the church calendar. On 23 June, Klidonas brings bonfires to Naoussa, Prodromos and Alyki. In early July, Naoussa's fish and wine festival fills the harbour with grilled fish, local wine and dancing. On 15 August, Panagia Ekatontapyliani in Parikia holds the island's biggest feast, with a procession and fireworks. On 23 August, Naoussa re-enacts the pirate raid of 1537 by night in the old port. Ferries and hotels are fullest around 15 August.

  • 23 June: Klidonas
  • 15 August: Panagia, Parikia
  • 23 August: pirate night, Naoussa
